On Monday afternoon, New York showgoers were eager to welcome back two of the city’s most beloved and celebrated designers, Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez, after they showed their last two Proenza Schouler collections in Paris.
They brought out the big guns for the intimate homecoming — guns, in this case, being models like Gemma Ward, Amber Valletta, Sasha Pivovarova and Karen Elson — who stepped out in a series of wearable separates, oversize dresses and giant accessories in tough fabrics and muted tones.
Made up largely of denim and leather jackets, shirts, vests, skirts and dresses, the collection had a casual, menswear-inspired feel; this allowed more special statement pieces like boots, coats and (almost comically large) bags to stand out. Despite seeming a little covered-up for spring, each look had a cool, non-precious functionality to it that could easily withstand a tough day in NYC; the focus on denim also felt like a nod to the designers’ return to America. Welcome back, boys!
